She waited for applause, as is her habit, but there was none. It was as if a fog of silence descended. And then they started to make noises and clear their throats and get up and move around. They thanked her for coming and for speaking to them, but they did it with a certain reserve. Katzenberg didn’t hug her goodbye. Eisner got a laugh when he said, “I want to agree with the first lady on her eloquent stand on keeping this private.”

And they all got in their cars and left, going to dinner at Eurochow, Morton’s, and The Ivy. Hillary said goodbye, and got in her car, and she felt … different. She didn’t know what she was feeling but it was a kind of combination of relief and pride, with a little anxiety around the edges.

She realized: This is what it feels like to tell the truth. This is what it feels like to take a chance to help our country. This is what it feels like to spend your capital.

She leaned back into the soft gray leather of the wide backseat and closed her eyes. “Let’s go,” she said to the driver. And she slept all the way to the airport, peaceful and spent.
